Capitol Reef National Park preserves the Waterpocket Fold, a nearly 100-mile-long monocline or wrinkle in the Earth's surface. The story written in the rocks takes place over 280 million years and is an almost complete record of the Mesozoic Era. This diverse geology has created a variety of habitats for desert plants and animals. People have also made a home in the area for thousands of years. Connect to human history along the boardwalk at the Petroglyph Panel as well as by picking fruit in season from the historic Fruita orchards. Visitors will find numerous recreational opportunities throughout the park from scenic drives to camping, hiking, and stargazing.
