The Cottonwood Fire burning west of us is more than 45 miles from Torrey, with significant distance and terrain separating the fire from the Fremont River Valley. There is no direct fire threat to Torrey, Teasdale, Grover, or Capitol Reef National Park. Highway 24 is open, and the area is fully accessible.
We have seen periods of smoke and reduced visibility, especially earlier this week. Conditions change day-to-day depending on wind direction. Town officials are monitoring air quality using local PurpleAir sensors in Torrey and Capitol Reef and staying in regular contact with Wayne County Emergency Management and state wildfire authorities.
Both Wayne County and the Town of Torrey have implemented fire restrictions that prohibit fireworks, open fires, and other ignition sources. Local law enforcement is actively enforcing these restrictions due to heightened wildfire risk. These measures reflect the Town’s commitment to protecting residents, visitors, and surrounding public lands.
“Safety is our priority. Torrey is not in the fire zone, and there are no evacuation orders. Our restaurants, lodging, shops, and services remain open and ready to welcome visitors.” - Mayor Mickey Wright
